Toronto International Airport: Behind the Busy Hub
Inside Canada’s busiest airport: what travelers can expect, how it all runs, and what makes it more than just a stopover

Toronto Pearson: Canada’s Air Travel Hub
Today we are going to tell you about Canada's largest and busiest air hub — officially named Toronto Pearson International Airport, but often simply called Toronto International Airport. This major transportation center is named after Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and is located approximately 27 kilometers northwest of downtown Toronto, in the city of Mississauga.
Handling millions of passengers annually in recent years, Toronto International Airport ranks among the top 30 busiest airports in the world by international traffic.
Terminals and Transportation
The airport covers a vast area and once had three terminals. However, today only Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are operational — Terminal 2 was demolished in 2007. Terminal 1 is one of the largest airport terminals in the world by floor area and serves as a major hub for Air Canada. Terminal 3, meanwhile, is home to WestJet and various international airlines.
To ease movement between the terminals, the airport operates the LINK Train, a fully automated, elevated people mover that runs 24/7. This electric train connects Terminals 1 and 3 with the Value Park Garage and the ALT Hotel, making transfers quick and efficient.
Modern Services and World-Class Amenities
Inside the airport, travelers will find an impressive array of services and amenities. Whether you have a short layover or a longer wait, you can enjoy a variety of shops — from luxury brands to duty-free outlets — along with dozens of cafes, fast food outlets, and full-service restaurants offering local and international cuisine. The airport also showcases rotating art installations and cultural exhibitions, often featuring Canadian artists, to create a vibrant and engaging environment.
For digital convenience, free WiFi is available throughout both terminals, with good coverage and no time limit, making it easy to stay connected or get work done while waiting for your flight.
Premium Comfort and Accessibility
For passengers seeking extra comfort, peace, and privacy, a VIP premium lounge provides a luxurious escape from the busy terminals. Accessible to all travelers regardless of airline or class of ticket (for a fee), the lounge offers comfortable seating, gourmet meals, beverages, shower facilities, and even meeting rooms — ideal for business travelers or those with long layovers. Handling millions of passengers annually in recent years, Toronto International Airport ranks among the top 30 busiest airports in the world by international traffic.
Toronto Pearson also participates in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, working to reduce its carbon footprint and implement sustainable practices. In recent years, the airport has introduced energy-efficient lighting, electric ground service vehicles, and waste reduction initiatives.
Whether you're arriving in Canada, making a connecting flight, or starting your journey from Toronto, the airport provides a well-organized, modern, and passenger-friendly experience that reflects Canada's commitment to high standards in travel and infrastructure.
